Escape Marrakech into the lush Atlas Mountains. Discover Berber villages, the beautiful Ourika River, and hike to the famous Setti Fatma waterfalls.
The Ourika Valley is one of the most accessible and scenic day trips from Marrakech. Located just 65 km from the city, the drive time from Marrakech to Ourika Valley is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes — making it perfect for a full-day excursion.
The valley follows the Ourika River through the foothills of the High Atlas, passing traditional Berber villages, terraced fields, and a vibrant weekly souk (Mondays) at Aït Ourir.
At the end of the valley, the village of Setti Fatma is the starting point for the famous waterfall hike. The Setti Fatma waterfalls — a series of 7 cascades tumbling down the Atlas slopes — are reached by a 45-minute rocky trail along the river.
Your driver picks you up from your riad or hotel in Marrakech at 9am. The scenic drive takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes through the Haouz plain and into the Atlas foothills. Stop at a local herb and argan oil cooperative for a free demonstration.
Explore the Ourika Valley road with its stunning views of terraced barley fields, walnut trees, and traditional Berber villages. Your driver will stop at viewpoints and share the history and culture of the Atlas Berber communities.
Arrive at the village of Setti Fatma at the end of the valley. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch (tagine, salads, mint tea) at a riverside restaurant overlooking the rushing mountain stream.
After lunch, begin the hike to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. The trail follows the river upstream and involves some scrambling over rocks. The first cascade is reached in about 15 minutes; the full 7-waterfall circuit takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Bring comfortable shoes and expect some spray — it's refreshing on a warm day!
Drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the early evening (~6:30pm). Your driver drops you at your accommodation. Total round trip from Marrakech: approximately 130 km.
The drive from Marrakech to Ourika Valley is approximately 65 km and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes depending on traffic. The road follows the Ourika River through increasingly beautiful mountain scenery as you approach Setti Fatma.
The Setti Fatma waterfalls are most impressive in spring (March–May) when snowmelt increases water flow. Summer is also popular as the Atlas provides cool temperatures compared to Marrakech's heat. Avoid visiting right after heavy rains as the trail can become slippery.
The hike to the first 2–3 waterfalls is easy to moderate — mostly flat walking along the river with some rock scrambling near the cascades. The full 7-waterfall circuit requires a bit more effort with steeper sections. Wear non-slip shoes and expect to get your feet slightly wet.
